Boat Cleaning Tips: How to Keep Your Boat Looking Its Best

While it’s all well and good to own a boat, any boat owner should be keenly aware of the importance of regular cleaning and maintenance to keep it looking and performing at its very best. Much like other valuable possessions you may have, investing some time and effort into keeping your boat clean and tidy will extend its lifespan and give you many joyful outings on the water alone or with friends or family.

Below are five of our top tips to keep your boat looking its best:

1. Don’t Neglect Maintenance

Regular maintenance is absolutely essential for all boats, no matter how big or small. Take time to routinely check for signs of damage as well as wear and tear. Barnacles, chipped or cracked paint or damage to the hull or gunwales can greatly diminish the safety and efficiency of your boat, so have them repaired sooner rather than later. Also, don’t neglect to check your boat’s engine, electrical systems, batteries and other components to ensure that they’re in good working condition.

2. Clean the Hull and Deck

In terms of structural stability, the hull of your boat is paramount. Make sure to keep it clean and tidy to avoid damage from environmental factors such as exposure to saltwater, as well as to sun and wind. Discoloration is sure to happen at one point or another, so keep your vessel clean and when you notice some discoloration, give it a good clean with a mild cleaning agent and a soft-bristled brush to knock away any soil or debris. Salt buildup and other debris can eat away at the surface, so keeping the hull and deck clean can alert you to any signs of damage.

Also, don’t neglect to apply coats of wax or sealing products to protect against any additional damage.

3. Cleaning the Interior

Boats with interior cabins tend to get cluttered fairly quickly, especially if you’re out on the water for an extended period. Keep your boat looking clean and tidy by removing any unnecessary clutter such as food packaging, containers or any other items that aren’t integral to the operation and safety of your boat. Also, take some time to clean the windows and any mirrors with good glass cleaning products. Lastly, any galleys and storage compartments should be routinely opened up and cleaned, inside and out.

4. Maintaining the Upholstery and Canvas

While the entire purpose of a canvas or boat cover is to protect your boat from the elements when not in operation, the boat cover itself can experience accelerated wear and tear if not properly cared for. Naturally, it’s preferable to see wear and tear on the canvas rather than on the boat itself, but still take the time and effort to keep the canvas or cover clean using appropriate cleaning agents that are designed for the type of material in question.

5. Polishing and Waxing

As mentioned previously, a fresh coat of wax or sealant can give your boat much-needed protection against any damage in the future. Moreover, it keeps your boat looking shiny and clean. With exposure to the elements, however, your wax or sealant can wear off over time. Reapply fresh marine-grade polish or wax products on occasion to maintain the protection and beautiful appearance of your boat.
